A big THANK YOU to Mindstream Interactive for hosting our May event and feeding us delicious Greek food while there. Another thank you to our inspiring speaker Dylan Menges of Menges Design who spoke about leaving the corporate world and making it on your own. He even brought his parents to enjoy the discussion.
Unlike most presentations we see at work, Dylan didn’t use many slides to tell us what to do, instead he told stories. Here’s a few we hope is useful for you:
Have 6 months of savings in your bank account. This will tide you over as you market yourself and get work.
Have an accountant. They know all the complicated tax cuts and tricks.
Have a support system. People you can rely on his for advice, direction, and assistance.
Don’t be afraid. Get out there. Show your work – it doesn’t have to be paid work, but put your creations into the world to show people what you do.
Don’t forget to take care of yourself physically and mentally. Be sure to take time to sleep and eat well, as that is when you perform at your best. A mental break is necessary as well to clear the mind.
Don’t limit yourself. He started out branding, but now a lot of his work is in creating illustrations and murals for different walls and items around town.
